Nagavara Channapatna is a small village located in the southern state of India, Karnataka. It is situated about 45 km from Mysore. It is famous for the production of Channapatna toys, a traditional craft of India. The word Channapatna is derived from the name of a lake and the lake is located near the village. The toys produced at this place are of different shapes and sizes like animals, birds and even dolls. The production of the toys is done with a mix of skills like turning, carving and polishing which give an attractive finish. Every piece of wood used is carefully selected and then coated with lacquer to enhance their beauty. The use of vegetable dyes gives a beautiful colour to the toys. These toys are popular among both little children as well as adults. The village also has many shops where these toys can be bought or can be seen being crafted. The famous Channapatna toys are also exported to several countries across the globe. Nagavara Channapatna has become a popular tourist spot since it is the home to the famous Channapatna toys. Thousands of people from all over the world visit the village to get a glimpse of the wonderful craftsmanship. It is a great example of how traditional crafts can preserve their cultural identity and still remain popular in the modern market.
